Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor is an emerging technology with great potential energy and efficiency benefits.

VCS Denmark is taking another step towards sustainable water resource recovery at their Ejby Mølle wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), in Odense, Denmark.  With an eye on sustainability and infrastructure intensification, VCS is undertaking the most ambitious demonstration testing to date related to an emerging technology, the membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR).

Partnering with MABR manufacturers SUEZ’s Water Technologies & Solutions, OxyMem and Aarhus Vand along with international consultant CH2M (now Jacobs), VCS will be working to develop detailed design and operating information for the MABR over a two-year demonstration testing period.  VCS has aimed to make this a collaborative project with a goal of advancing the technology for the entire industry, and has gained additional sponsorship from Rambøll, Stjernholm and Gustaf Fagerberg.

“The MABR has the potential to be a paradigm shift in how we deliver oxygen to wastewater to produce clean water.  The innovative use of membranes and biofilm processes intensifies the wastewater process, resulting in energy savings, greenhouse gas emission reduction, and the potential for a huge net overall benefit to human health and the environment” says Per Henrik Nielsen, project manager with VCS and the visionary for the MABR demonstration testing.

Commissioning of the demonstration testing facilities is scheduled for April 2018.  The VCS team is dedicated to ensuring that the information is disseminated as openly and widely as possible to enable all clean water agencies to benefit from their investment.  Stay tuned for the VCS website (http://www.vcsdenmark.com/) for updates on this industry leading demonstration project.
